Relocating To A New Residence
March 6th, 2010
Anytime one relocates their residence there are bound to be some challenges. To limit the chaos, one needs to be organized. My approach was to pack everything in advance before the movers arrived. It is also wise to hire experienced movers who also insured. However, even with insurance, it can be a challenge replacing certain items. Additionally, organizing and labeling boxes can save time when unpacking.
The task of relocating is physically daunting. One should be careful not to strain oneself in the process. Also, one should wear clothing that is durable, protective, and suited to the task. Wearing old clothes can help save one’s wardrobe from any unnecessary damage. Also, tight fitting clothes, such as skinny jeans, should be avoided as it would be difficult to bend or stretch.
Once the movers arrived, I provided them with an itemized register of all the boxes and large furniture pieces. This list also indicated the location of each box at the new residence. It was a letter coded system. For example, B would stand for bedroom, K for kitchen, L for living room, and so on. Further differentiation would occur with a numerical designation.
The moving company was quickly able to load its van. After they left, I locked the apartment and returned my set of keys to the property management company. The remaining items, such as my clothes and other loose items, I packed into my SUV. Upon securing these items, I drove to my new home. The new place was only thirty minutes away and somehow I was able to arrive before my movers. I went to my new apartment wait.
After entering my new residence, I noticed that there was no heat. The landlord had forgot to turn it on. However, the electricity was still running. So I decided to get a portable space heater from a local home furnishing store. There are always unpredictable events in any move and one should take such things in stride.
The movers arrived soon after my return from the store. Unloading the van took longer than i expected. The movers were quite efficient, however, they managed to consume the remainder of the afternoon in the process. After their departure, I needed a refuge. I decided to comfort myself with a quick meal. As I had so efficiently organized my boxes, I was very easily able to locate the boxes that contained the eating utensils.
After a brief respite, my next order of business was to secure my sleeping arrangements. The movers had placed the bed in its proper location, however, I still had to arrange the mattress and box spring. My sleepwear was easy to find as were the bed spreads, pillows, and sheets. This would be my first night in the new apartment.
